Divorce Mediation Lawyer in Sugar Land

Representing Houston, Katy, Conroe, The Woodlands & Nearby Areas

Mediation is a process during which divorcing couples attempt to reach agreement on all matters surrounding the dissolution of marriage prior to heading into court.

During mediation, Sugar Land mediator Yasmin Kutty works as a neutral third party to resolve issues such as:

For mediation, Attorney Kutty does not represent one party but instead assists divorcing couples in reaching a mutual agreement. While not required by all courts in the Counties of Fort Bend, Harris, Montgomery, and Brazoria, it is strongly encouraged, and some judges will not hear a case until mediation has been completed.

Yasmin Kutty and her associate, Melissa Pickett are both credentialed to mediate family law matters. Please contact our office to get prices for half and full day mediations that can take place in person or by Zoom.

What Happens during Mediation?

During most mediation proceedings, the parties are not in the same room during the process. The mediator does not represent either party but merely serves as a messenger to relay information back and forth in order to reach a settlement. Mediation is a voluntary process but may be ordered by the court. However neither side is obligated to settle at mediation. Typically if the mediation does not result in a settlement, the parties then move forward with a hearing in court.

Your mediation session will last as long as you need it to and may even be split up into more than one visit. Even when it takes some time, however, mediation is significantly less time-consuming and expensive than taking divorce proceedings to court.

The Benefits of Mediation

There are numerous benefits of mediating your divorce, including:

  • A lower cost over traditional divorce proceedings
  • A potentially shorter time period, as mediation lasts only as long as it takes you and your spouse to reach an agreement
  • More privacy, as mediation is a confidential process outside of a public courtroom
  • More control, as you and your spouse make the decisions, not a judge
  • Improved communication that paves the path for a more amicable future
  • A higher success rate when both couples are committed to coming to an agreement

After this process is completed, your mediator will write your preliminary agreement for you and your spouse to sign. This is known as a Rule 11 Agreement in Texas, and is the basis for your formal divorce agreement. As such, your agreement will be based on your preferences, wishes, and best interests, agreed upon by you and your spouse, and not a judge that may not know your full story. Mediation therefore, puts the power back into your hands.
